GoPro is one of the biggest names in sports camera wear, so I was excited to review one of their best-selling models, the Hero5. This camera is durable, comes loaded with some great extras, and features durable housing that will ensure your camera can take plenty of use and abuse out on the road.

This model comes with a curved adhesive mount, a standard frame, a USB cable, mounting buckle, and flat adhesive mount. Unfortunately, compared to the other cameras that I reviewed, this model has a very low waterproof rating and can only be submerged up to thirty-three feet of water.

The camera can also support a high capacity TF card up to thirty-two gigabytes, however, the card is sold separately.

The camera itself features a very small compact design and offers an ultra-wide angle of one hundred and twenty degrees, which allows you to adjust the camera at several angles. This camera is able to capture crystal clear image quality in a variety of lighting conditions.

It also comes with a built-in vibration motor, microphone, and intuitive controls that make this camera very user-friendly. Overall, this budget-friendly model is a great choice for many summer riders and those who are not tech-savvy and looking for a model that’s simple and fun to use.

Motorcycle Helmet Cameras Buyer’s Guide

Buying a helmet cam can add a whole new element of fun and excitement on your next ride and it can also be a great way to customize your motorcycle helmet. Choosing a new camera for your motorcycle helmet should seem like a no-brainer, especially since of the best motorcycle helmet brands also produce cameras, but if you’ve never purchased a camera before, or you don’t know what features you need in a helmet camera to get the best, clearest footage, then you may end up with a model that offers poor resolution and a shaky video that makes it impossible for you and your family and friends to get a clear view of your riding experience.

This guide is designed to walk you through which features you need, how these camera work, and what you can expect in terms of performance and functionality. A camera specifically designed for motorcycle use will allow you to capture crystal clear video footage when you’re riding at high speeds, will allow you to document your cross country adventure, and can allow you to share pictures and footage with family and friends.

These cameras will come in handy whether you want to use it for your next bike trip, protect yourself in the event of an accident, or you need a model that allows you to get really creative and edit fun videos that you can upload to social media. Basically, these cameras can add an extra element of fun and safety to any riding adventure.

Why You Need a Motorcycle Helmet Camera

As more and more riders purchase these cameras to capture events on the road, there’s been a significant spike in camera sales. These cameras can be very useful when it comes to documenting accidents, which will protect the rider from any subsequent blame.

There are many reasons why these cameras are trending lately. One of the main reasons is for safety purposes. These cameras have been known to keep a rider safe from dangerous drivers on the road.

When an accident occurs, the rider is usually blamed, even when the driver of the car is the one at fault. Fortunately, for riders with a camera, these situations are not as common, since filmed footage can easily be shown to law enforcement to prove that the driver of the car was the one at fault.

Additionally, video footage can also prove useful when it comes to an insurance premium. Motorcycle insurance can be pricey, since riding a motorcycle is considered very unsafe. These days, many insurance providers will offer a premium that’s significantly lower to a rider that uses a helmet camera.

This is because of the evidence it can provide to the insurance company in the event of an accident. Of course, there are many fun aspects linked to using a helmet cam.

When you’re riding, you can record some of your favorite routes and watch them once you’re home. You can even use this footage to help critique your riding skills, or to share your journey with friends and family.

For these reasons, it’s definitely worth investing in a helmet cam. If you haven’t purchased a camera yet, then it may be because you don’t know which model will work for you, or what features to look for. I’ll go over some great features to look for and what can make a good camera a great one

Frame Rate and Resolution

One of the most important features that you’ll want to check out before you choose a new camera is the frame rate and resolution. These specs will help you determine whether or not the camera you’re interested in offers top of the line image quality. Remember, the higher the resolution, the better the image quality, since a higher resolution will ensure detailed footage.

4K is the highest resolution available. It provides impressively clear footage and is extremely sharp. However, cameras with this resolution often come with a higher price tag.

The footage will also take up more space, which can be an issue if you’re planning a longer journey. Cameras with 720p and 1080p resolution often fall under the high-definition category. 1080p is considered standard resolution for the majority of cameras on the market these days.

For the frame rate, the higher the frames per second, or FPS, the smoother the videos will be. A higher frame rate will be crucial if you’re planning on making plenty of slow-motion videos. But cameras with a higher frame rate will also take up a lot of space. Thirty frames per second is the current frame rate standard and it will allow you to capture smooth videos.

Additionally, this type of captured footage will take up less space compared to videos that are shot at a higher frame rate. Keep in mind, models that have a higher frame rate tend to perform much slower in low lighting conditions. So, if you do a lot of night riding then you’ll want to go with a model that offers a minimum of thirty frames per second.

Performance

sports

High-performance models are more durable, come loaded with a variety of features, and often offer better image resolution.

A model that offers a stand out performance will be a must if you’re looking for a versatile camera that can handle a variety of lighting conditions and life on the road. A high-performance camera must be able to:

  • Provide multiple functions
  • Operate well at high speeds
  • Record sharp footage
  • Provide wide-angle footage
  • Capture images in HD

If you plan to record your adventures then you want to make sure you capture the best videos possible. This means using a durable, stable camera, one that offers high-quality recording. The camera should also be able to handle the elements.

Showing footage from your latest adventure can be exciting, but it can also be embarrassing if the footage is too shaky, there’s a bunch of background noise, or the footage is poorly shot. There are many models on the market that are able to correct things such as extreme weather conditions, including wind, in addition to correcting issues such as background noise, and even shakiness of the footage. If you don’t pay attention to the features that can correct these issues, then you may end up with a camera that captures footage that’s not useable.

If you’re considering using this type of camera, make sure you do your research first, since there are specific models available that are designed for different purposes. Because of this, it’s important to know what features you’re looking for before you hit that buy now button.

Durability

Durability is another important aspect of a good helmet camera. These cameras must be able to survive life on the road and work well in rain and in windy conditions. There are some models that will work better in the rain than others.

Additionally, some models will still be able to provide high-quality footage, even if you’re traveling over extremely rough terrain. You’ll also come across models that offer a variety of resistances. Basically, the type of camera you choose will depend on where you intend to take it.

Construction

The size and shape of the camera you buy will also matter. The camera should be compact, lightweight, and highly portable. A lightweight camera will not add too much weight to a helmet, which can have a negative impact on your comfort during a long ride and can cause tension in the head and the neck.

Stabilization

No one is going to want to watch a video that’s shaky. Top of the line models will offer top of the line image stabilization. A built-in gyroscope and accelerometer will provide the best video and image stabilization.

Electronic image stabilization has become an important feature that can offer the best image stabilization. This feature works by eliminating any blurring that can occur due to inclement weather conditions.

So, if you don’t plan on winterizing your motorcycle, you can hit the road with your new weatherproof helmet camera and take in the beauty that many riders miss out on when they store their bikes for the winter months.

FOV

FOV, or field of view, is the total area that’s captured by the lens. A fisheye lens can ensure that you get the max field of view since these lenses have wide angles.

These angles will provide a few different FOVs such as:

  • Wide-One hundred and sixty to one hundred and seventy degrees
  • Medium-One hundred and forty degrees

The only real drawback with this type of lens is distortion, which is referred to as the fisheye effect. This tends to bend the image around the corners.

Battery

A camera’s battery life is another important spec that you’ll want to pay attention to. The last thing you want to have to worry about is your camera dying during the day when you have no way of recharging.

Low-priced models may come with a low battery lie of just thirty minutes. Look for a model that offers at least one to two hours of operation per charge. In most cases, you can purchase additional battery packs directly from the manufacturer, in order to enjoy a longer recording time.

These batteries may only offer an hour or two of recording time, but they usually feature a decent charge time of thirty minutes to one hour.

Storage

Because of their smaller size, these cameras usually come with minimal storage capacity. Because of this, I recommend buying a camera that comes with an external SD card, which you can use for longer rides. Using an SD card will ensure that you don’t run out of space and miss out on capturing important moments. SD cards with a class ten rating will offer the best performance.

WiFi

High-end cameras will come with WiFi. With WiFi capability, you’ll be able to directly stream the footage from your camera to your smartphone or PC.

GPS

A model with built-in GPS will automatically geotag any recorded footage so you can keep track of where you’ve filmed, so you can return to a certain location later down the road.

Sharing Features

One of the main reasons a motorcyclist will want to use this type of camera is to share footage, with family and friends. If this sounds like you, then look for a model that will allow you to share your adventures with your family and friends, or on social media.

If you want the ability to upload your video footage to your social media accounts, then make sure the camera you choose can connect to your smartphone, PC, and iPad.

Connectivity

Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity will also be crucial in you want the ability to remotely access and control your files from a distance. This type of feature will also allow the user to use their camera via a Bluetooth enabled device.

Mounts

If you have a front or rear-facing camera, then you won’t need to see everything in your FOV, so you can use a top mount. Side mounts are a better choice if you wear a full-face helmet and you’re looking for an off-center angle. For some riders, a chin mount can be ideal, especially if you’re into aerodynamics.

Types of Motorcycle Helmet Cameras

There are many different styles, types, and models of cameras available to choose from. Below, you’ll find a list of the two different types available, which will help you to choose a model that will work for you, your riding style, and your needs when you’re on the road.

Single

Some models will only allow you to record video footage and will feature only basic recording options. Some may only be able to shoot in lower aspect ratios. These cameras are designed for the rider who only wants to record video footage and play it back or edit it later.

Integrated

Many models that you’ll come across will come loaded with some nice extras such as 4K recording quality, WiFi, and GPS. These types of integrated cameras are bundled together for the rider who wants to focus on video editing.

These cameras can also be mounted to a variety of surfaces, not just your helmet, such as your car’s dashboard or your bike’s handlebars. These models are somewhat larger and heavier compared to single style cameras, so you’ll need to take the extra bulky design and heavier weight into consideration before you buy.

Protective Housing

A helmet is designed to protect the rider’s head from injuries sustained upon impact. However, a camera will also need to have its own protective housing in order to ensure it’s able to make it through a serious accident.

Because some models can be very delicate, I recommend buying a case that’s reliable and durable and designed with impact resistance in mind. The case must be tough enough to protect the camera, but should allow you to continue using the camera even when the case is on.

Loop Mode

Loop recording allows you to continuously record, without the worry of how much space you have left on the SD card. With this mode, the camera will overwrite any older recordings in order to ensure you’re able to capture everything you want without running out of space. Many models will instantly activate this mode once the built-in shock sensor has detected impact.

Pricing

Models that are sixty dollars and under are pretty basic in design but may come with some nice extra features such as GPS or a variety of camera angle options.

In the sixty to one hundred dollar range, you can find high-quality imaging, touchscreen capability, and a longer battery life.

Models over one hundred dollars will come loaded with more features, improved durability, a sleeker design, longer battery life, night vision, Bluetooth capabilities, and more editing and angle options.

If you’re planning a long cross country journey, then you need a model that’s built tough, one that offers the best battery life you can find, and a model that can handle inclement weather. Cameras with these features will often come at a higher price, but they’ll definitely be worth it if you want to record your journey with a camera that’s durable and reliable.

Benefits of Using a Motorcycle Helmet Camera

  • Use your camera to report accidents. The ability to report accidents is one of the most important aspects of one of these cameras. The smaller size of the motorcycle makes it more difficult for other drivers to see motorcycle riders in traffic, which can lead to a serious accident. A camera will allow you to pull up the events that led up to an accident in times when recalling the series of events is difficult.
  • These cameras come loaded with some great features including hands-free controls, GPS, and Bluetooth connectivity. Many of these options are perfect for the rider who wants to edit their footage or use it off the bike in their home or car.
  • Editing and creating videos. While the ability to record or edit a video when you’re on the go is a huge plus for some riders, in order to get more out of your cam, try hooking it up to your PC to edit. This will also allow you to upload the footage online to your social media accounts and show how to navigate a certain area, design a training video, or create a montage of your ride.
  • Try different angles. When you’re focusing on your ride, the cam is able to capture the footage all around you. You can watch the recorded footage later on and enjoy a whole new perspective of your adventure and check out everything you missed.

Final Thoughts

The best motorcycle helmet cameras will allow you to capture important events, beautiful spots, and your journey as a whole. Many of the cameras I’ve included on my list are versatile, durable, and offer excellent image quality and image stabilization, so you don’t have to worry about a shaky camera lens or a fuzzy or blurred image.

Many of these cameras are also available at a reasonable price and will work with most styles of helmets. This buyer’s guide is designed to help you find a camera that will work for your riding needs, depending on where you ride, what time of day, and whether or not you’re the type of rider that will ride their bike in rainy and windy conditions.

This extensive buyer’s guide will help you narrow down your choices, allowing you to find a camera that’s the perfect fit and one that comes with all the right features that allow you to clearly capture every moment on your next riding adventure.
